چکیده

0 N E member of the genus Bacteroides-Bacteroides melaninogenicus-characteristically produces a jet-black pigment when grown on blood agar. This property was described by Oliver and Wherry (1921) in the original account of the organism, and has since been regarded as highly distinctive. The work described in this paper is based on the chance observation that other members of the genus are also capable of pigment production. Originally the black pigment of B. melaninogenicus was believed to be melanin (Oliver and Wherry). Subsequently the nature of the pigment was investigated by Schwabacher, Lucas and Rimington (1947). They identified it as haemin, but their cultures were grown on blood agar. Since pigment production by other members of the genus has now been recognised, a study of the pigment produced by these bacteria as well as that of B. melaninogenicus seemed to be of interest.

Characterization of bacteroides melaninogenicus.

Fifty-eight human isolates of Bacteroides melaninogenicus, 42 from a variety of clinical infections and the rest from normal flora, were studied for pigment production and ultraviolet light fluorescence and by forty biochemical and other tests, including end-product analysis by gas-liquid chromatography. In a number of instances, tests were repeated several times and the results were reproducib...

Genetic Transformation of Amylase Gene to Ruminal Bacteroides Species Using Conjugation Consequence for Improvement of Rumen Enzyme

Rumen bacterial strains can potentially be manipulated to perform functions different from wild type species. The most numerous species of bacteria in the rumen and gut are species of the familyBacteroidetes, whichcan have the potential for genetic modification for enzyme production. One of the genetic manipulation of rumen bacteria can perform for production of starch digestive enzyme for the ...

Carotenoid expression in nonphotosynthetic bacteria isolated from Sippewissett marsh soil

Carotenoids comprise a major class of pigment molecules with a broad natural distribution from bacteria to higher plants. In this project I tried to examine carotenoid production in six nonphotosynthetic bacteria isolated from Sippewissett marsh soil. Pigment extraction and spectrophotometer analysis showed that these isolates contain, carotenoid pigments. The pigments of five of these strains ...

Hemin and vitamin K compounds as required factors for the cultivation of certain strains of Bacteroides melaninogenicus.

In 1921 Oliver and Wherry described ail anaerobic, gram-negative, black pigment-producing rod isolated from human mucous membranes, tonsils, infected surgical wounds, urine, and feces. Since the black pigment formed by the organism growing on blood agar was believed to be melanin, the organism was named Bacterium melaninogenicum. This proved an unfortunate epithet, for Schwabacher, Lucas, and R...

Electron transport system of the protoheme-requiring anaerobe Bacteroides melaninogenicus.

Protoheme is essential for the growth of some strains of Bacteroides melaninogenicus. At low concentrations in the growth medium, protoheme determines the doubling time, total cell yield, and amount of cytochrome per bacterium. At high protoheme concentrations, the doubling time, total cell yield, and amount of enzymatically reducible cytochrome appear to remain nearly constant, and protoheme i...
